Affectionately known as “Tosa”, Wauwatosa is situated directly west of Milwaukee and is named for the Potawatomi word for firefly. It contains shopping hubs, a plethora of trendy dining options, major medical and high-tech research facilities, and is the headquarters for various corporations.
At its heart is a charming historic village surrounded by beautiful tree-lined neighborhood and wide green spaces. With over 180 stores and services, Mayfair Mall also contains numerous dining facilities and an 18-theatre cinema complex and is considered one of Wisconsin’s premier shopping centres. Just northwest of here is the Mayfair Collection which opened in 2015 and is home to upscale outlet stores like Nordstrom Rack and Saks Off 5th as well as a Whole Foods Market.
Located at the beautiful Kneeland-Walker Victorian Gardens the first weekend of August, the Annual Firefly Art Fair hosts an eclectic collection of local artists, live entertainment, and a variety of homemade tasty food vendors.
Tosa Village, or the Village of Wauwatosa, is a pedestrian and bike friendly commercial district on the banks of the Menomonee River. With architecture, reminiscent of a European village, you will find over 100 stores, restaurants and businesses in restored historic buildings featuring boutiques, galleries, al fresco dining, and much more.
Wauwatosa comes together for TosaFest each September to celebrate their community spirit with kid’s activities, live music, arts & crafts, a Chili cook-off and so much more.
Local Places We Love
For authentic Hawaiian cuisine, Ono Kine Grindz is a cozy Hawaiian themed spot with a little grocery store inside. Mouth-watering smells greet you as soon as you walk through the door and the BBQ is out of this world. Be sure to wash it down with one of their fresh tropical juices.
Head over to Cranky Al’s for Tosa’s best donuts, coffee, and breakfast sandwiches in the morning, run around the park several times and head back for their amazing pizzas for dinner. And on Friday nights, you can trade in your pizza for a good old’ fish-fry.
For an old world German experience, Café Bavaria has a great selection of on tap German beers and a delicous beer cheese soup. Or try their fully loaded Bloody Mary complete with bacon, cheese, a brat, pickle spear, brussel sprout, and other garnishes. Located right on the river, you can enjoy the view of Tosa village from huge windows fireplace or head outside for a riverfront experience. If you prefer your beer from Belgium, then Café Hollander is right across the way and features the best of Belgian beers along with some of Tosa’s tastiest burgers and cheese curds.
For the ultimate fun in cocktails, Wauwatiki is Tosa’s first choice. Each tiki drink contains carefully selected spirits, fresh citrus, and homemade syrups in adorable glasses with whimsical garnishes you just have to see in person.
Le Reve Patisserie and Café is a charming French bistro with sky high ceilings, natural light, dark wood tables, and exposed brick interior. With an incredible seasonal menu and a jaw-dropping pastry case, knowledgeable and prompt service, and macarons that would be the envy of Paris – it one of Tosa’s gems.
With all the phenomenal restaurants in Tosa, Barre District is a welcomed necessity. Combining the best elements of ballet with Pilates, sports conditioning, and flexibility training, this studio has incredible instructors that make classes fun and time fly by.
Wauwatosa’s real estate includes a variety of houses which range from $200K-$700K as well as some condos and apartments. The Washington Highlands Historic District, a landmark residential community built in 1916 which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, contains many affordable luxury older homes.
